Candidates for the Level Two Laser Run Coach Course must demonstrate a strong foundation in modern pentathlon and a commitment to further developing their skills in the sport.
Direct Entry
To join Pentathlon GB’s Level Two Laser Run Coaching Course, candidates must have completed the Modern Pentathlon’s Level One Laser Run Course or the Laser Run Activators course and have a minimum of one year of experience in the sport of modern pentathlon.
Candidates must provide evidence of their completion of the Level One Laser Run Coach Course the Laser Run Activators course, such as a certificate. Additionally, candidates must use a covering letter to demonstrate their experience in modern pentathlon through participation in competitions, training sessions, or other relevant activities. This should include:
- Knowledge of a basic session plan.
- Understanding of the importance of health and safety and participant welfare, including Risk Assessment, Emergency Action Plan (EAP) & Registers.
- Fundamental coaching skills of how to coach.
- Ability to evaluate and reflect on their own coaching practice.
- Experience of facilitating as at least an assistant coach/ activator in a live coaching environment.
- Understanding of laser run sanctions and rules, including triathle.
New Coaches/Accepted Prior Learning
Candidates who do not meet the requirements for Direct Entry may be considered for the Pentathlon GB’s Level Two Laser Run Coaching Course, if they can provide evidence of equivalent prior learning or experience in modern pentathlon. This may include coaching in related sports such as running, shooting, swimming, or fencing, or relevant qualifications in coaching or sports science and should be showcase through an accompanying cover letter.
Candidates will be required to undergo an assessment of their skills and knowledge in laser run and modern pentathlon with an interview with the course tutor, before being accepted onto the Level Two course. The applicant should expect to be asked questions around their understanding of:
- Preparation of a basic session plan.
- Understanding of the importance of health and safety and participant welfare, including Risk Assessment, Emergency Action Plan (EAP) & Registers.
- Fundamental coaching skills of how to coach.
- Ability to evaluate and reflect on their own coaching practice.
- Experience of facilitating as at least an assistant coach/ activator in a live coaching environment.

Safeguarding
All coaches, over the age of 18 years of age must complete and retain safeguarding training. This can be done before or during your course, however, your tutor won’t sign you off as complete until you have completed the safeguarding training and uploaded a certificate on to your Sports 80 membership. This is an additional cost to the coaching course . Without this, you will not be sanctioned or insured to coach once qualified to do so.
The safeguarding training must be either:
- UK Coaching Safeguarding and Protecting Children course.
- UK Coaching Safeguarding Adults course.
- Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport course (Scotland)
DBS
All coaches working with Children (U18s) and in regulated activity/work must hold an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) (England and Wales) check, and where required with a check against the barred list with Pentathlon GB or Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) (Scotland).
