800 athletes enjoy 2016 British Biathlon Championships

Nearly 800 athletes took part in last weekend’s 2016 British Modern Biathlon Championships at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre in Solihull. Athletes ranged from 9-70 with the U10, U11 and U12 age groups competing on Saturday and the remaining classes all taking place on Sunday.

Modern Biathlon is an exciting multi-discipline sporting environment which involves swimming and running with distances varying between age groups.

The youngest 3 age groups swim 50m and run 800m with the U13, U14 and Masters classes swimming 100m and running 1600m and the U15, U16, U17, U19, Junior and Senior classes swimming 200m and running 1600m.

All athletes had qualified for the Championships by virtue of their performances at one of our preliminary qualifying competitions that were held across the country in September and October. This meant the competition was extremely fierce with some of the best swimmers and runners from throughout the UK taking part.

Many athletes were competing at their first British Biathlon Championships whilst others have taken part in the event for many years. There were numerous outstanding performances throughout the day with close finishes in lots of the age groups.

In addition to the competition, there was lots for athletes, parents and teachers to get involved with on the weekend. Trade stands included Simon Coates Photography whose photos can now be bought online if you didn't get a chance on the day, Fine Designs who were selling competition hoodies and t-shirts, and our partners blueseventy who had both training and competition swimwear for people to try.

There were also Laser Shooting Taster sessions expertly led by coaches Alan Brown, Phil Hobbs and Trevor Haynes which provided a great opportunity for people to try a third modern pentathlon discipline and a Biathle information stand to let people know about another of our sports and opportunities to get involved.

Pentathlon GB hope that everybody who took part across both days enjoyed their competition. We’d also like to say a huge thank you to all of our volunteers. Without them, the event would simply not be possible.

There are numerous opportunities to get involved with all of the sports we offer, including modern biathlon. To see all of our upcoming competitions and training events visit our calendar and to find clubs that are located near to you, have a look at our regions section.
