WRC Mexico - Fell and Helyer in top eight posted by J Bartu on08-03-2010

Two top-eight finishes for women in mexico

Olympic silver medallist Heather Fell and Louise Helyer both recorded top eight finishes for Great Britain as the women's individual final took centre-stage at the year"s opening Modern Pentathlon World Cup in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, overnight.

Fifth-placed Fell, from Tavistock in Devon, recovered from an average swim to take 26 wins from the fencing event, giving her a personal best of 1000 points and leaving her just one win behind the three-way tie for first place.

She went on to clock up another personal points-best in the ride before recording the day's fourth-fastest time in the combined event to create an overall points total of 5340.

Former world junior team gold medallist Helyer, from Kirriemuir in Scotland, triumphed in the pool with the day"s fastest time of 2:15.01.  20 wins from 37 bouts in the fencing, however, saw her take 16th place before recording one of the day’s 10 perfect scores of 1200 in the riding event.  Her combined time of 13:10.91 was fourteenth fastest overall.

20 year-old Samantha Murray was Britain’s third contender in Mexico and finished 16th overall on her World Cup debut.

Germany’s Lena Schoneborn was the overall winner, helped by some outstanding fencing and riding as well as a solid performance in the combined event. Margaux Isaksen of the USA was second and Evdokia Gretchichnikova of Russia took bronze.

Dr Hazel Egan posted by on08-03-2010

It is with deep sadness I have to report that Hazel Egan from Sealions MPC passed away last week.

For many years at competitions, Hazel alongside her husband Mike, would have been seen supporting her two sons, Jim and Ed as well as being heavily involved in the organisation of the event.

The funeral will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Crooms Hill, Greenwich, SE10 8HG on Thursday 18 March at 1.30 pm,

All of us at Pentathlon GB extends its deepest sympathy to the Egan family.

WRC Mexico - Weale close to medals posted by J Bartu on07-03-2010

Weale close to medals in Mexico

Britain's Sam Weale fell just agonisingly short of a medal when he finished fourth in the year¹s opening Modern Pentathlon World Cup in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, overnight in the men's individual final.

Weale, 28, from Yeovil in Somerset, pulled himself up the field with good performances in both the riding and the final combined run-shoot event to take 5704 points overall behind Lithuania's Andrejus Zadneprovksis in bronze with 5720 points.

David Svodoba of the Czech Republic won gold ahead of Serguei Karyakin of Russia in silver.

Weale was one of only seven athletes to score a perfect 1200 in the riding event and then produced the second fastest combined time of 10:39.00 to finish strongly. Earlier he was placed 18th after the fencing and 16th after the swimming which took place in sunny conditions before clouds closed in for the combined event.

Britain's other two contenders, Nick Woodbridge and James Cooke, were 21st and 22nd respectively. Teenager Cooke, who now trains with the Pentathlon GB high performance centre at the University of Bath, made an impression on his senior world cup debut when he posted the day's fastest swim in 2:00.70.

Today's action in Mexico will feature the individual women¹s final.
Britain's three contenders are Samantha Murray, Louise Helyer and reigning Olympic silver medalist, Heather Fell.  Murray, still only 20, finished second in the national selection trials going into the world cup season.

Helyer, 25, from Kirriemuir in Scotland, is a former world junior team gold medalist and a European senior team relay silver medalist.  Fell, from Tavistock in Devon, who celebrated her 27th birthday earlier this week, was world no.1 in 2008 after a sensational season which included Olympic and world cup final silver.

Pentathlon GB Notes for Editors

Modern Pentathlon is one of Britain's most successful Olympic sports. The sport for women was introduced to the Olympics at Sydney 2000 and since then Britain¹s women have won four Olympic medals or 66 per cent of the medals available to them. Steph Cook won gold and Kate Allenby bronze at Sydney 2000, with Georgina Harland winning bronze at Athens in 2004 and Heather Fell winning Olympic silver at the Beijing 2008 Games.

Great Britain had the maximum complement of four pentathletes Heather
Fell, Katy Livingston, Sam Weale and Nick Woodbridge competing at the Beijing Olympic Games. It was one of only 10 nations to have the full
complement of four pentathletes in Beijing. Four British women achieved the qualifying standard for Beijing, but only two could compete, while Weale and Woodbridge became the first men to represent Great Britain in the modern pentathlon at an Olympic Games since Atlanta 96.

The sport of modern pentathlon has traditionally consisted of five
disciplines - shooting, fencing, swimming, riding and running. However, at the end of 2008 the international federation, the International Modern
Pentathlon Union (UIPM), decided to replace two of the individual elements the shooting and running with a combined run/shoot.

The new combined event format sees athletes first compete in fencing when they take-on each other athlete in the field to one hit with each bout taking a maximum of one minute; a 200m freestyle swim; show jumping when athletes get to meet their horses just 20 minutes before going into the riding arena; then the combined run/shoot where athletes run 60m, shoot at five targets in up to 70 seconds, run 1k, shoot at another five targets in 70 seconds, run 1k, shoot at a further five targets in 70 seconds and then finish off with a final 1k run. All of the disciplines take place in one day.

Each performance during the day is converted into pentathlon points and the winner is the athlete to amass the most points at the end of the day. The start of the run/shoot is staggered so the athlete leading the field after
the earlier disciplines starts first. This means the first athlete to cross
the finish line is the winner.

Teenager Cooke set for World Cup debut posted by Steve Ballinger on23-02-2010

Eighteen-year-old Jamie Cooke will make his World Cup debut in Mexico next month.

Cooke, winner of the British Olympic Association’s modern pentathlon One to Watch Awards in 2008 and 2009, is a member of the six-strong British team competing at the first World Cup event of the season.

The Cheltenham pentathlete, which trains at the Pentathlon GB high performance centre at the University of Bath, joins Beijing 2008 Olympians Sam Weale and Nick Woodbridge in the men’s team.

Cooke, who is still classed as a junior athlete, earned his place on the team after finishing second to Weale in the overall ranking list following national selection competitions.

Heather Fell, Britain’s Beijing 2008 Olympic silver medallist, is joined by Samantha Murray and Louise Helyer in the women’s competition. Murray, who at 20 is also still a junior athlete, finished second in the national selection competitions.

The first World Cup of the season takes place in Playa Del Carmen from 4 to 7 March.

Woodbridge will return to action at the second World Cup of the year, which is in Cairo, Egypt, from 18 to 21 March. He is joined in the men’s team by David Atkinson, Russell North and Steven Mason.

Mhairi Spence, who topped the national women’s rankings, is joined by Beijing 2008 Olympian Katy Livingston, as well as Katy Burke and Freyja Prentice in the women’s team for Cairo.
