Weale and Woodbridge through to European final posted by Steve Ballinger on16-07-2010

Britain's Sam Weale and Nick Woodbridge both qualified safely for Sunday"s final of the Modern Pentathlon European Championships in Hungary.

The pair both went through from the same semi-final in Debrecen today (Friday), repeating the feat achieved by Britain’s four women athletes in their semis yesterday.

Weale made an impressive start by finishing joint top in the fencing in his semi with 19 wins from 28 bouts, while Woodbridge scored 11 wins in the same semi.

Woodbridge progressed up the leaderboard with the third fastest time in the semi, clocking 2:03.73, while Weale’s 2:06.67 was eighth fastest.

They then went safely through to the final, with Woodbridge completing the combined event in 11:16.82 - the fifth fastest time, and Weale in 12:05.39.

National coach Philipp Waeffler said: "Sam had a good competition. He was solid throughout the day and had no problems at all. Nick didn’t fence well, which immediately means you have to run hard and shoot well in the combined event. He did that, and they’re both through to the final.”

Tomorrow (Saturday), the women return to action with Heather Fell, Louise Helyer, Katy Livingston and Mhairi Spence going in the final.
